7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Tibet
At least 95 people killed in a strong earthquake in Tibet near China's border with Nepal
The earthquake that struck the Tibet region on Tuesday morning had a magnitude of 7.1, according to Chinese state media. The epicenter of the quake was located near the city of Shigatse, one of Tibet's holiest cities, at a depth of approximately 10km.
Rescue efforts have been hindered by strong aftershocks and freezing temperatures. More than 1,000 houses have been damaged, with some reports indicating that over 1,700 homes were destroyed in a county with a population of 60,000 people.
