At least 8 people dead after boat carrying migrants capsizes in the English Channel
At least 12 migrants died trying to cross the English Channel to England, with the French government confirming the deadliest such disaster of the year. The incident occurred when a boat carrying over 50 migrants sank off the northern coast of France, with around a dozen individuals found in critical condition. Emergency crews rescued 65 people, with a total of three helicopters, two fishing vessels, and two boats deployed in the search and rescue operation. The mayor of Le Portel described the incident, stating that the bottom of the boat ripped open, and that the agitated waters made it difficult for people who don't know how to swim to survive. This incident brings the total number of people who have crossed the Channel to England to 21,403 as of September 2, 2024, with Afghans being the top nationality crossing the Channel in the year ending June 2024.
The toll was terrible, with eight people reported dead.
Despite the emergency care provided, eight people have died.
Let's ask ourselves the question: Why do they want to go to Britain? Because something is drawing them there.
If people don't know how to swim in the agitated waters ... it can go very quickly.
We absolutely must – and this is a very important point – re-establish special relations with our British friends.
This is a tragedy that affects us all.
All government services are mobilised to find the missing people and treat the injured.
What needs to be said is that they shouldn't cross.
The gangs behind this appalling and callous trade in human lives have been cramming more and more people on to increasingly unseaworthy dinghies, and sending them out into the Channel even in very poor weather.
Unfortunately, every day is like this for us. The smugglers -- a criminal network -- continue with insistence to send people to their deaths in the channel. It really is unacceptable, scandalous. And it is high time that a lasting solution is found with Britain.
Far too many children, women and men have already lost their lives this year in terrifying ways across the Channel. Every one of them was preventable.
