Floods and Landslides in Brazil

At least 23 people have died due to heavy rains and resulting floods in southeastern Brazil

In the past few days, heavy rains have caused significant damage and displacement in parts of Brazil. In the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo, at least 19 people have died, with 13 fatalities reported in Mimoso do Sul, a city located 74 kilometers (46 miles) south of the state capital Vitoria. An additional eight deaths were reported in neighboring Rio de Janeiro. Warnings for heavy rainfall remain in effect through Tuesday morning, with potential for scattered showers continuing to pose threats. The south-eastern regions of Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis, and Espirito Santo, have received close to 250mm (9.8 inches) of cumulative rainfall since Friday. Rescue operations are currently underway to locate individuals who may have been stranded by the floods. Meanwhile, in Europe, the Iberian peninsula has experienced high temperatures over the past week.
