Astronauts on ISS Take Cover as Defunct Russian Satellite Breaks Up in Orbit
The Resurs-P1 Russian Earth observation satellite unexpectedly broke apart into over 100 pieces of debris while in orbit around the Earth. The event occurred at approximately 10am mountain time on Wednesday. According to US Space Command, there is no immediate threat posed by the debris to other satellites in orbit. The satellite was in a nearly circular orbit at an altitude of about 220 miles when it disintegrated.
