Archbishop of Canterbury resigns over handling of church child abuse case

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has announced his resignation following a report that concluded he failed to take sufficient action over claims of abuse by a serial abuser associated with the Church of England. Welby stated that stepping aside is in the best interests of the Church of England and that he takes personal and institutional responsibility for the period between 2013 and 2024. The report found that the Church of England covered up the case and that there was a worrying pattern of deference to the Church. Welby had faced growing pressure to quit and had sought permission to resign from King Charles III.
