Alabama carries out first nitrogen gas execution in US
Kenneth Eugene Smith, 58, was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. in an Alabama prison. The state said the method was humane, but critics called it cruel and experimental. It was the first time a new execution method had been used in the United States since lethal injection.
