Alabama Governor Signs Law Protecting IVF Clinics from Legal Liability

Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama signed a bill into law in a late-night session, which grants civil and criminal immunity to providers of in vitro fertilization (IVF) services regarding death or damage to embryos. The legislation came about following the Alabama Supreme Court's mid-February ruling that classified frozen embryos as children under state law. This decision led some IVF patients to consider moving their frozen embryos out of Alabama due to potential legal liabilities. Republican legislators supported the immunity proposal as a solution to clinics' concerns, and doctors from at least one clinic announced they would resume IVF services on Thursday.
