7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan, leaving seven people dead and over 700 injured
A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan's eastern region on Wednesday, at around 7:58 a.m. local time. The epicenter was located about 11 miles southwest of Hualien City. At least seven people were killed and over 700 were injured as a result of the quake. Building collapses, power outages, landslides, and tsunami warnings were reported in various areas. Two buildings were at risk of collapse, and some roads to the region were cut off. The earthquake was felt strongly in the capital, Taipei, where tiles fell from older buildings and newer office complexes. Train service was suspended across the island of 23 million people. Tsunami warnings were issued for both Taiwan and parts of southern Japan, leading to a suspension of flights at the main airport in Okinawa.
