6.9 magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea leaves at least four people dead and destroys over a thousand homes

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Papua New Guinea, resulting in at least five reported deaths and the destruction of approximately 1,000 homes. The earthquake occurred around 88 kilometers (54 miles) southwest of Wewak and was felt in areas including Ambuni, where it hit about 38 kilometers from the town. Villages were already dealing with heavy floods prior to the quake. Earthquakes are common in Papua New Guinea due to its location on the seismic "Ring of Fire."
